JAMES INGRAM
Ohio native James Ingram saw his musical career kick start in 1980 with a demo tape; the song was “Just Once”, the composition delivered to Quincy Jones for a possible inclusion on Jones’ landmark album The Dude. Jones liked what he heard and invited Ingram to provide the vocals for “Just Once” as well as “One Hundred Ways” on the album. The Dude became an international smash and both of Ingram’s vocals in the album rocketed to the top of pop, soul and adult contemporary charts, ultimately landing Ingram a Grammy for best R&B vocal performance.
Ingram’s debut album, It’s Your Night, was released in great anticipation, with remarkable results. Led by the smash duet with Michael McDonald, “Yah Mo Be There”, It’s Your Night was arguably the best soul album of 1983.
From there, Ingram built his name steadily. Ingram was known almost exclusively as THE adult contemporary duet artist, working with likes of Patti Austin, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers and Barry White amongst many; the songs “Baby Come To Me,” “Somewhere Out There,” “Secret Garden” and “How Do You Keep The Music Playing” among his notable duet-works, scored big on the charts.
